Jen Lexmond - Biography
Jen Lexmond is currently aspiring to become a virtuous and fulfilled human being. To aid her in this endeavor, she decided to move to England to go to Warwick University and study philosophy, politics, and economics- believing that the secret to a happy life lies within the domain of a bunch of books written by lots of dead white men about theories of knowledge and the existence of moral truths. Boy was she wrong. But still, she counts herself lucky at least for getting out of Marietta, Georgia, USA where she spent about seven years of her life flailing about in a conservative, suburban hell. And yet she appreciates where she came from, and knows that without the experiences of prejudice and narrow mindedness from the bible belt under her own belt, she would not be the politically aware, compassionate, open minded, righteous babe that she is today.
Since her relocation across the ocean, Jen has developed into a fine, respectable young lady- never stepping into line or obeying what she doesn't believe to be right, and refusing to conform to societal gender roles. As a result she has become increasingly involved in gender politics as well as gay and human rights movements and takes pride in being the liaison officer of WASS (Warwick Anti-Sexism Society). Jen has a real passion for activism and strives to keep a sense of purpose in her pursuits, though she has a real tendency to fall into existential crises and lose touch with reality when forced to read too much Berkeley/Hume/Locke/any pompous epistemological text for her degree.
Jen also has been known to play the guitar while singing/conversing/commenting about the politics of her personal relationships, her reflections about the world around her, and the dilemma which is her life. Jen picked up her first guitar at age 13 in 1999 (which, if you are bad at math(s) means that she was born in 1986, August 19 to be exact) and had lessons for about a month before she decided that lessons were boring and for people who weren't creative enough to learn on their own. Throughout high school, Jen continued to play, inspired by others before her (Ani Difranco, The Shins, Rilo Kiley, Radiohead, The New Pornographers, Simon & Garfunkel, and Kate Bush to name a few) and started playing the odd local gig. After her move to England and with the help of her first friend on the sceptered isle (who just happens to be a charitable part-time music producer and possessed an old computer with digital recording software) Jen dipped her proverbial toe into the vast ocean that is music recording, almost drowned, and then resurfaced with a four song demo entitled 'The Point Is…'. When she finally made it to Warwick University she began gigging at the university and in surrounding areas (so far Leamington Spa, Stratford upon Avon, and Sheffield) where she has become a seasoned performer. Her live gigs are characterized by a mix of between song banter, unapologetically honest lyrics, and a guitar style that oscillates between resonant strumming and urgent, rhythmic staccato.
